Slanelough

WE head to Newcastle today with SLANELOUGH (2.10) and if ever a horse deserves to win a race it’s him. He’s been ultra-consistent over the years, with a lot of seconds and thirds on his record without actually winning one over fences yet.

That means the handicapper hasn’t really been able to give him much leeway so in some senses he might have been his own worst enemy. He’s been very slow to come down in the weights, but that’s just a consequence of running his race more often than not.

The trip, track and ground will all be fine today so hopefully everything will fall right and we can get that first chase victory. The last time he went to Newcastle he was just in behind Lord Du Mesnil and Sam’s Adventure - and that pair haven’t done too badly since!

It’s a small field but as competitive as you would expect on a Saturday. The one thing he does lack is a gear at the end of his races, but he jumps well and has a great cruising speed so hopefully we can make best use of it.

As you can see, he's a happy, relaxed horse who is loving life at home. Hopefully - at last - today's the day!
