WHILE work is going on getting our horses fit and ready for the season ahead, there has also been plenty of graft happening on the facilities here at Hazelrigg.
We had actually planned to upgrade and add a new round Wexford deep-sand gallop last year but Covid happened so we put it on hold. But with things getting more back to normal now, we’ve had the diggers in this week.
As you’ll see from the video above and photos below, it’s a decent size of a job but it will be well worth it once it’s finished. The gallop, with sand imported from Ireland, will be one-and-a-half furlongs round, which will allow us to do a lot of long, steady work. It will be great for working on the horses’ core fitness, their legs, building stamina and also for wind.
So it’s a significant addition to what we already have here and will be something we’re able to incorporate into the training programme this season. Obviously we will still use the main gallop for the faster work, but this allows us to have the slower, more demanding slogs on the round one. It will also give the horses more variety in what they're doing day-to-day.
I think you always have to keep looking to move forward so while the existing facilities are top-class and we've been training winners, hopefully this addition will improve things even further. Fingers crossed!
